Oldest Search and Rescue Dog Retires

Jack and I talked this morning, about the beautiful Golden Retriever , Val the National Disaster Search Dog in Montebello, CA , who is retiring after 13 years of service…and his replacement, Rico, who’s a three year old black lab who’ll be FEMA-certified this month. Thought you might like to see a photo of these two heros.

Labor Day Week End Events

Today’s Country Music, WTCM, is proud to co-sponsore the Big Jon Salmon Classic this week end on East and West Grand Traverse Bays. The tournament consists of a Ladies, Pro, Amateur, and Sweet 16 division and will give away over $22,000 in cash prizes alone. Get registered at www.gtasfa or by calling 231-218-6726. The Boyne City Labor Day Car Show will take place Friday and Saturday at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Over 200 cars expected on the streets of downtown Boyne City, along the shores of Lake Charlevoix. www.boynecityrotary.org

Hughston’s Cow Camp Rodeo, one of the favorite stops along the rodeo circuit, is being held all week end at the Cow Camp in McBain. Enjoy calf roping, team roping, barrel racing and more. www.cadillacmichigan.com

Manton’s 86th annual Harvest Festival runs thru Monday. Horse pulls, a chicken barbecue, country music jamboree, crafts shows, and fireworks round out the week end. Plus, the Manton Area Museum will be open to the public at the corner of U.S. 131 and Griswold.

Castle Farms in Charlevoix presents the Royal Craft Show Saturday and Sunday.10-5 Saturday and 10-4 Sunday…expect hundreds of crafters from around the midwest. $3 admission. www.castlefarms.com

The AMVETS Ladies’ Auxiliary of Baldwin hosts a week end of fundraising for Paws with a Cause (a program that provides assistance dogs to disabled veterans). A poker run, a pork chop dinner, broomstick pool tournament and a…uh….”Underwear Party” are listed as highlights. 231-745-8613

A number of bridge-walks set for Monday. There’s the big one on the mighty Mac…start anywhere between 7 and 11am for the 5-mile trek. On a smaller scale, walkers are invited to cross the Glen Lake Narrows at noon, and in Pine River it’s the “Little Bridge Walk”…meet at noon, start walking at 1:00…meet in front of the Town House Bar. 231-547-5190

The Boyne City Police Department holds its annual Labor Day Week End Drag Race on Sunday at the Boyne City Airport. Races run from noon til 6pm. Gates open for vehicle registration at 8:30. Races will be side-by-side, one-eighth mile drags with full tree or pro-tree options. Grudge matches are welcome. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, and spectators are all welcome. 231-582-0352

Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling holds the Michigan Bike Festival Saturday. The Logsplitter Mountain Bike Challenge is a 30 mile race for adults, plus there are 3-mile routes for the kids. All events begin at 10am. Free camping all week end long at Hanson Hills Recreation Area.

Nashville Flooding Devastation

Hi All…and especially those who went to Nashville with me a few weeks ago. I was absolutely flabbergasted to see the news over the past couple of days regarding the storms and rising waters that have devastated parts of Nashville. It’s hard to believe that it was sunny, warm and dry while we were there, staying at a luxury hotel that is now under at least ten feet of water and closed for the foreseeable future. The Grand Ole Opry is also closed, although the entertainment and radio broadcast have been moved to a different location. Downtown Nashville and the Cumberland River area have sustained great damage as well. Check out this video on youtube. It was made by the hotel manager at the Opryland…just incredible.
