Oldest Search and Rescue Dog Retires

Jack and I talked this morning, about the beautiful Golden Retriever , Val the National Disaster Search Dog in Montebello, CA , who is retiring after 13 years of service…and his replacement, Rico, who’s a three year old black lab who’ll be FEMA-certified this month. Thought you might like to see a photo of these two heros.

Labor Day Week End Events

Today’s Country Music, WTCM, is proud to co-sponsore the Big Jon Salmon Classic this week end on East and West Grand Traverse Bays. The tournament consists of a Ladies, Pro, Amateur, and Sweet 16 division and will give away over $22,000 in cash prizes alone. Get registered at www.gtasfa or by calling 231-218-6726. The Boyne City Police Department holds its annual Labor Day Week End Drag Race on Sunday at the Boyne City Airport. Races run from noon til 6pm. Gates open for vehicle registration at 8:30. Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling holds the Michigan Bike Festival Saturday. The Logsplitter Mountain Bike Challenge is a 30 mile race for adults, plus there are 3-mile routes for the kids. All events begin at 10am. Free camping all week end long at Hanson Hills Recreation Area.

Honoring Sgt. Jason Calo in Mancelona

Friday 8/27/2010, The start of High School Football at Elk Rapids, the crowd and teams honored fallen son Sgt. Jason Calo, a 2005 graduate and football team member of the Mancelon Ironmen. In a raffle held during the game over $1000.00 was raised for the family.

It has sure seemed like Northern Michigan has been hit hard with a string of losses in Afghanistan. But when we look around at the honor and respect, not to mention the outpouring of love and support shown by friends family and complete strangers it is a reminder of why we all cherish the heart of where we live. This video is a tribute to a son, husband, father and friend. Rest In Peace Marine Sgt. Calo.

We ended up in a tie last Friday on Song Wars, so we brought both contestants back Monday. It took two nights, but our Champion, Jaron & The Long Road To Love (“That’s Beautiful To Me”), finally defeated the Challenger, Burns & Poe (“How Long Is Long Enough’). Jaron continues on as Champion, and he will face another new Challenger Tuesday night on WTCM Song Wars.
